Happy Halloween

This year Sophia was a spider, and Jane was a lady bug. I didn't really think about it until after they had their costumes, but they were both insects. I didn't plan it that way, but it was kinda funny when I thought about it. Sophia was actually excited to put on her costume which surprised me. She even wore the hat part for the entire ward party and Trunk or Treat, like 2 straight hours. Jane didn't mind wearing hers either. She was crawling all over the floor of the gym at the church. Sophia won the prize for best girls costume tonight. She didn't seem to really care, but Jeff and I were proud.

This is Jane and her friend Harry Potter. (Paul).

A lot of people have asked me how we are going to deal with Halloween and Sophia's Diabetes. We've asked around and talked with other parents that have children with Type 1 Diabetes, and also done some reading on different ways to handle the candy and not being able to each much. We let her have a little of it tonight, but then tomorrow we are going to take her to the toy store and let her trade us the candy for a toy. That idea was one that I heard over and over again from different people. That way, she still gets to go and do the whole Trick or Treat thing. Hopefully it will become a tradition that over the years she will look forward to as something that we can go do together the day after Halloween.

I never would have thought of that candy thing with diabetes! You are such a great mom, I really admire how well you take care of her. The toy idea is fantastic! I should do that...its not like I need the candy :)

Thank you thank you for putting up pictures so fast! It is so nice to feel like we can keep up with you guys and those little girlies. Their costumes were great!

I wish I had that candy trade-in deal when I was a kid! A toy would be way cooler than feeling nasty from too much sugar. (Well now anyway, probably back then it would be more of a toss up)

I was just telling Chad that I would do the candy trade in idea for our kids! He said, "I'll go for that. Then I would get all the candy." Apparently that idea is just brilliant all around! :)
